POPE Francis called on the international community to assist migrant Bangladeshis and Rohingya were bobbing in the sea.
"I continue to follow with worry, I am hurt to hear a story that many refugees stranded in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea," the Pope said in his speech on Sunday (24/05/2015).
Francis welcomed the efforts of the countries that have agreed to take the migrants and asked "the international community to offer humanitarian aid".
Last week, Indonesia and Malaysia agreed to offer temporary shelter for Rohingya. But Bangladesh, which is considered to be looking for economic purposes rather than fleeing persecution, will be returned.
An estimated 1,700 Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants have landed in Indonesia and 1,100 in Malaysia since the crisis began in early May, according to Anadolu Agency. [ds / islampos]
